From College Softball to Entrepreneurship
Jonathan Breeden: [00:00:00] On this week’s episode of The Best of Johnston County podcast, our guest is AnnaKate Gilchrist, owner of Inspire Nutrition in Clayton and Evolve Nutrition in Smithfield. We talk to her a little bit about what kinds of shakes and teas does she serve at her two nutrition bars in Clayton and Smithfield, why they are healthy, and why you should think about using them, and they give you a ton of protein, and some of her involvement in the community and where she sees it going, as they might be expanding to the Cleveland area, which makes me excited.
So if you’re interested in protein shakes, coffees, all that kind of stuff, listen in.
Welcome to another episode of Best of Johnston County, brought to you by Breeden Law Office. Our host, Jonathan Breeden, an experienced family lawyer with a deep connection to the community, is ready to take you on a journey through the area that he has called home for over 20 years. Jonathan Breeden: Hello, and welcome to another edition of the Best of Johnston County podcast. I’m your host, Jonathan Breeden, and on today’s episode, we have the owner of Inspire Nutrition and Evolve Nutrition.
Inspire Nutrition in Clayton at Flowers Parkway at Flowers Plantation, and Evolve Nutrition next to the Belt on North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield, AnnaKate Gilchrist. And we’re gonna talk to her a little bit about her growing up here in Johnston County. She is a Cleveland High School graduate.
Go Rams. You know how everybody who watches this knows how I’m the, like, the biggest Ram fam there, fan there is. But anyway, and especially now that it’s in high school football season. And we’re gonna talk a little bit about that, where she went to school, how she got into the nutrition business, how she ended up getting the first store, and then she got the second store how her store and her employees can help you live a more healthy life, and some of her involvement in the community.
But before we get to that, I’d [00:02:00] like to ask you to like, follow, subscribe to this podcast wherever you see it, whether we’re on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, or any of the other social media channels, the Best Johnston County Podcast. Best Johnston County Podcast comes out every single Monday and has now for just under three years.
And it’s been a tremendous ride. We’ve had a lot of fun. We’ve had a lot of great guests. So go back and listen to some of our previous episodes. We’ve had the vast majority of the county commissioners. We’ve had Adrian O’Neal from the County Parks Department. We’ve had the county manager, Rick Hester.
We had Woody Bailey talking about IT services. Tim Sims, local dentist. Just Dog People right here at 4042 talking about ways to train your dog and how to feed your dog healthier food. So if you love Johnston County as much as I do, this is the podcast for you. Welcome, AnnaKate.
Anna Gilchrist : Hey, how are you?
Jonathan Breeden: No problem. I was about to say, I’ve, I met you, like, many years ago, and then we reconnected here. I’ve sort of followed your career here as you’ve gotten into the nutrition business, where you sort of, you were in high school, and then you went away, and then you came back. Yeah. So [00:03:00] anyway. So tell us who you are and what you do.
Anna Gilchrist : So I’m AnnaKate Gilchrist. I own Inspire and Evolve Nutrition, like you mentioned. I was born and raised in Johnston County. I went to all the Cleveland schools. And I grew up playing softball, and that took off to where I went to Barton College in Wilson, and I played college softball. And I was a pitcher and first baseman.
And at the time, I had terrible nutrition. It was absolutely horrendous. And knew nothing about nutrition, working out a ton throughout the week and was exhausted. And there was a girl on my softball team, actually, at Barton who opened a nutrition club the year that she graduated in Wilson, and I slowly became addicted to the drinks.
They were delicious, made me feel good, gave me the energy I needed. And when I was at Barton, I was getting my bachelor’s in business administration, and I did it also with my master’s in strategic leadership accounting in four years. I was trying to cram it in four while [00:04:00] doing the honors research program.
So, I had my early morning classes, then I had softball during the day, and then I had my master classes from 6:00 to 10:00 at night, so I needed something to keep me going, and the products did it. So I fell in love with them and she eventually presented the opportunity to me, and from there, it just took off.
Jonathan Breeden: Oh, my goodness. Well, that’s interesting. So you were a college softball player with bad nutrition.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: You don’t hear of many college athletes with bad nutrition.
Anna Gilchrist : Believe it or not, there’s a lot of them that you’re working out so much that you don’t really, you know, you just eat whatever you can, and then you don’t see the effects of it because you’re working out so much, burning so many calories.
But waking up early and staying up late for school and softball, traveling, all the things I just needed something that gave me energy. And the teas and the shakes really fueled me, and they didn’t taste like protein or vitamins, they tasted like it shouldn’t be good for [00:05:00] me. So that’s, it. Well, I mean
Jonathan Breeden: Well, that’s a treat, ’cause I’ve never had one. So,
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, yeah
Jonathan Breeden: so it should something that tasted good, but it shouldn’t be good for you.
Anna Gilchrist : Right.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: ‘Cause I’ve had some of those Fair Life type drinks
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah
Jonathan Breeden: and they are not good to me.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. Yeah, I’m not a fan of those.
Jonathan Breeden: You’re not a fan
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah
Jonathan Breeden: of those. Yeah. Okay.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah
Jonathan Breeden: I’m not either.
Anna Gilchrist : I’m picky. I don’t want it to taste like protein, so if it does
Jonathan Breeden: Right.
Anna Gilchrist : I’m kicking it out, yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: Right, okay. All right. So what are the products that Inspire Nutrition and Evolve Nutrition sell and how do they work?
Anna Gilchrist : So we sell Herbalife Nutrition. We have protein shakes. So those are a complete meal replacement, so you can replace your breakfast, lunch, dinner, whatever you want it to be. It’s 21 essential vitamins and nutrients that make it a full meal replacement. 24 grams protein which we can increase the protein if needed. And it’s a complete meal replacement, so, under 300 calories. So that’s the great part is you’re getting high protein with low carb, low sugar, low fat.
And then we have our herbal teas, which is like a on the menu you’ll see it’s like energy teas. [00:06:00] This is what I personally first fell in love with because I was always looking for some sort of energy drink because I needed energy and I wasn’t fueling my body with the right energy. So the energy teas they’re 200 milligrams of caffeine, which we can adjust because some people don’t want the full 200 or they want more, or they want, you know, it just depends on the person.
But that has vitamins B6, 12, and C. It’s gonna burn 80 to 100 calories. The drink is only 20 calories, so you’re gonna burn more than you’re intaking. And then it has mental clarity and focus, so that was what I needed, whether it was on the softball field, it was in the classroom or, you know, doing homework, I just needed to be able to focus and have that energy boost, but with no crash.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. That’s a lot of caffeine.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, which we can lessen it, yeah. So they say don’t go over about 200 per serving, and to stay under 400 a day.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: How much do these rockstars and those kind of drinks have in them?
Anna Gilchrist : Those can range from 1 to 200, I’d say. Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: [00:07:00] 1 to 200?
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. Okay. It just depends.
Jonathan Breeden: All right.
Cool. All right.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: And then you also, you’ve got, you got the shakes, you got the teas.
Anna Gilchrist : We have-
Jonathan Breeden: You have the bowls?
Anna Gilchrist : Yep. So we have the acai bowls, so it’s like a a smoothie bowl blended up with your greens in it. So it’s got all the superfoods, fruits and veggies but it doesn’t taste like fruits and veggies.
It tastes more like a blend of fresh fruit. And then we have protein coffees. So that’s like more of a protein snack. It’s got 15 grams protein, 80 milligrams caffeine, only a gram of sugar.
Jonathan Breeden: Well, that’s good.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: Low sugar.
Anna Gilchrist : Very low sugar.
Jonathan Breeden: I mean, that’s good.
Anna Gilchrist : Very low.
Jonathan Breeden: The right, and I think you also, I think you have waffles?
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. You can turn any protein shake flavor into a protein waffle. So those end up being 30 grams of protein and a full meal replacement. Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: They taste like waffles?
Anna Gilchrist : They do. They do. They’re a little more of the cakey type because it is packed with protein. But it tastes like a waffle, and we do protein donuts every Friday.
We always have protein cake pops and just any protein [00:08:00] ball form, we have them stocked all the time. So we try to keep it fun with different ways to get your protein in.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. So it seems like protein is the reason, the base, like everything you’ve talked about is about protein.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: Why?
Anna Gilchrist : Well, a lot of people don’t get the amount of protein in for the day that they need to. So the more protein you fuel your body with, the more energy you’re gonna have. So, I always tell people, if you’re getting in, like, 20 grams of protein, add another zero to the end, and that’s like, about how many calories you want it to be for a healthy meal.
Which is hard for you to find something that has a good balance of carb, sugar, fat, calories, while you’re getting in the source of protein that you need.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. Well, now more and more people are on the GLP-1s.
Anna Gilchrist : Yep.
Jonathan Breeden: More and more people are going to them every week. And I know that protein becomes very important when you’re on a [00:09:00] GLP-1, particularly when you get to the higher doses where you’ve really kind of lost your appetite and you need that. So explain how your products help people who are on a GLP-1 and how should they go about, if they’ve never had one of these products, like me, how should they go about starting to find ones that work and figuring out what would work for them?
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. So we have a lot of customers that come in that take the GLP-1. And of course, they’re looking for protein. They’re looking for high protein. So I would first start with the shakes. And we have a kid-size shake that’s 16 ounces if you don’t want to go for the full size yet, and you wanna. ‘Cause there is a lot of options on the menu. So I would start with the shakes, and if you’re looking something as far as a snack, you can do the coffee that has 15 grams protein in it but the shakes, it’s a, you’re getting the essential vitamins and nutrients you need for a full meal. So that’s a great way to start.
We’ve got, like, fruity, we’ve got the kind that tastes more like a dessert more cake and [00:10:00] cookies. So there’s a wide range that you can look into.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. So do you know how many grams of protein people are supposed to have every day if they’re on a healthy diet? ‘Cause I don’t know.
Anna Gilchrist : So, yeah, so it ra- it ranges depending on, you know, if you’re a man or a woman, but it ranges from, like, 100 to 140.
So obviously men are gonna want to be closer to the 140. But it also depends on your diet as well. So, obviously if we have people that come in and they’re working on toning and not gaining muscle, then they want less protein. But they, you know, you still want a good chunk, closer to the 100 pro- 100 grams per day.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. All right. So, you also sell wholesale of these different products and powders and stuff like that. What are some of the wholesale products that you sell in the store, and what are some of the ones you can get through a Herbalife?
Anna Gilchrist : So any of the products we sell you can get in my store, or you can get it if we don’t have it in the store, I can, they can pick it up and or I can ship it to them. So for example, some people get the tea at [00:11:00] home all the caffeine source and then the stevia flavors that go in it to make it like a fun energy drink which has the vitamins, it has the mental clarity and focus, and gonna burn the calories. Some people want the exact protein shake we make for them and we will, you know, we give them the protein base and we can give them the exact recipe that we use.
I have people that get the coffee. Some people get the collagen even men, believe it or not. There are.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay.
Anna Gilchrist : Okay. It’s good for men, too. Bone health. So, it just depends on, you know, what they prefer, and we have ways that they can get it at home at a discounted price where they order it through the website and it’s shipped right to their door.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. And what are the most common things people are ordering from you?
Anna Gilchrist : The tea and then the protein shakes for sure.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay.
Anna Gilchrist : The protein.
Jonathan Breeden: I gotcha.
Anna Gilchrist : Like actual protein.
Jonathan Breeden: The actual protein. Okay, I gotcha. Now, you don’t have the same product lines as a GNC or any of that, right?
This is a. it’s more limited. How is it different from GNC?
Anna Gilchrist : So their protein is just protein. [00:12:00] Our protein combined with, so in a protein shake that we sell, you have your protein drink mix and your Formula 1 healthy meal, and together those two proteins make it a full meal replacement.
So that’s the difference in just the typical protein you might buy at any other store versus what we sell. It’s a complete meal so the 21 essential vitamins and nutrients. And Herbalife does sell, it has been I don’t know where, it has been stated in the past and it has this past year that Herbalife was the number one protein shake in the world.
So it’s because a lot of people are looking for more of a meal replacement now and not just another protein shake and then having to eat a meal with it after.
Jonathan Breeden: All right. So who are the, I mean, who’s your ideal clients that come into your stores? You have two stores. They’re open seven days a week. Is it, is it everybody? Is it young people? Is it old people? Who comes to shop?
Anna Gilchrist : It depends. I mean, we range from, we have kids in high school that come in all the way to 60s and 70s that are just looking for different ways to get in their protein. They may [00:13:00] not be looking for the energy, but we have, you know, our high school, college kids that are on the energy drink kick, and they are looking for anything to give them energy.
And then we have you know, moms coming in, whether it’s postpartum pregnant, or just a house full of kids and they’re like, “I need energy. Give me something.” So it really, it really just depends. But I’d say our, our main age range is 30 to 45.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. I got you. Well, that’s cool.

Jonathan Breeden: And people come Three or four days a week, they come once a month. I mean, you know, I mean, I, I mean, I’m just curious.
Anna Gilchrist : Most of them we have some regulars that come once a day, sometimes twice a day. Yeah. [00:14:00]
Jonathan Breeden: Oh, man. Gotta love those customers.
Anna Gilchrist : Yes.
Jonathan Breeden: Can you get a punch card if I come every day?
Anna Gilchrist : So we do have points when you come, you enter your number and you earn points, and then you get dollars off your next order.
Jonathan Breeden: Oh, that’s cool. That’s cool. So how did you come to owning your first store so young, and then how did you end up owning a second store so young?
Anna Gilchrist : So, when I was in college, I thought I was gonna go to college to be a CPA, actually. And then I took those courses and I was like, “Yeah, maybe this is not for me.” And when I started well, I found Vitality Nutrition in Wilson. I fell in love with the products, and then she’s like, “You need to start working here.” And I was like, “Well, there’s more menu items than, you know, a coffee shop. This is way too over, I can’t do that. That’s too much.” So eventually I went and worked for her, fell in love with the products, you know, she presented the opportunity to me.
And in my senior year with four months left to graduating, we were in the prime of softball season Inspire became for sale. And I, at that time, I was [00:15:00] like, ” That’s not for me. I can’t run a business. I know nothing about that. I am in school for business, but I don’t know if I can run a business at this time in my life.” And so I prayed about it I talked about it with my family, and things worked out and I bought that with four months left. So I was trying to run that in the midst of my bachelor’s, master’s, and softball. Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: I cannot imagine.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, it was a lot, but it was so worth it, every minute of it.
Jonathan Breeden: Oh my goodness. Well, at least you had a job when you graduated.
Anna Gilchrist : Exactly. You were lined up.
Jonathan Breeden: Right, if you start… So how long had Inspire been there when you, when you got it?
Anna Gilchrist : I think it was a little over a year.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay.
Anna Gilchrist : But it had two previous owners and it wasn’t working for them. So what I really wanted to do was come in and, you know, I wanted to make it work, obviously, and this was a town that I grew up in, so I wanted to be able to reach the community that, you know, I grew up as a child in.
So that was really special to me.
Jonathan Breeden: Right. So Inspire is next to the Food Lion at Flowers Plantation at [00:16:00] 42- … and Neuse River Parkway.
Anna Gilchrist : Correct.
Jonathan Breeden: And then I guess maybe a year and a half ago, you bought the other one Evolve in Smithfield, which is next to the Belk’s across from what was the old Chick-fil-A there on Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield. So how did that one come about? I guess these are both Herbalife stores that came available, I guess.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. So there was two previous owners to Evolve as well. The first owner was actually Hailey, that has Vitality in Wilson, and she sold it to someone. She was focusing more on things in Wilson. And when she was selling it, she had asked if I had you know, if I wanted it at the time, but I had just gotten Inspire, and I wanted, you know, let me get my feet settled. Now is not the time and then right after we celebrated two years of owning Inspire it became available again, and again, I prayed and you know, wanted to see if this was where the Lord was gonna guide me, if this was.
You know, I really wanted to be in that community. A lot of my family grew up in [00:17:00] Smithfield-Selma area. That’s where both my parents went to high school, and a lot of family friends out there. So, after praying, it all worked out, and within a month it was we were getting it flipped over.
Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: Okay. All right. And how are those two businesses, if people haven’t been to them since you’ve taken them over, different now? What are you doing to differentiate yourself, in what can some people consider kind of a crowded market.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: Of nutritions and shakes?
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. Well, the difference now I feel like is the consistency. The store hours stay the same unless we have holidays, but you know, we’re pretty much open every holiday except Christmas and Thanksgiving. We don’t close much. The consistency, the staff, I am a little biased, but I do have great staff that are, you know, of course I can’t be at both places at once.
So, they know the products, they’re consistent with how we make them. And the products that we sell we always keep it in stock. It’s made the same way. So, the customers know that when they show up that we’re gonna be [00:18:00] open. They can get the same drink every day and it’s gonna taste the same.
Jonathan Breeden: Well, that’s cool. That’s always the thing when you’re a franchise, when you’re a franchisee or franchisor is you wanna make sure that it’s the same product at all your locations. So what are your hours?
Anna Gilchrist : So Monday through Friday at both stores is 7:00 to 6:00, and weekends are 9:00 to 5:00
Jonathan Breeden: Seven days a week.
Anna Gilchrist : Seven days a week.
Jonathan Breeden: Two stores.
Anna Gilchrist : Yes.
Jonathan Breeden: That’s a lot.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: but you said you have, you got good staff.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah. And I love what I do, so, most days it doesn’t feel like work, but, you know- No … you get some hours.
Jonathan Breeden: No, believe me, I know. I love what I do, too.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: And most days it doesn’t feel like work, but when it does feel like work- Yes
you know.
Anna Gilchrist : Well.
Jonathan Breeden: Yeah, ’cause, you know, the buck stops with you. Believe me, I know all about- … owning a business. You know, if it doesn’t get done, somebody doesn’t do what they’re supposed to do, somebody calls out sick-
Anna Gilchrist : It goes on you …
Jonathan Breeden: it goes on you, right? ‘Cause the show has to go on. Yep. I get that. So how have I know you’re pretty community or, or p- pretty community-minded, as were your parents.
What are some of the things y’all are doing in the community?
Anna Gilchrist : [00:19:00] One of the big things I love to do I, I guess it’s, it was laid on my heart when I first got inspired ’cause I grew up, my mom was a first grade teacher for as long as I can remember. My aunt was also a teacher, then an assistant principal, principal, county office, et cetera.
So we give back a lot to the teachers. We, we give back in the community a lot, but specifically towards teachers whether we donate tees to the staff for back to school or for teacher appreciation week. We love to give back to the PTAs any way we can. So that’s one of our main ways we give back to the community.
Jonathan Breeden: Well, that’s cool. That’s cool. I used to, I used, I always try to buy breakfast for the guidance counselors at Cleveland High School every year, you know what I mean? ‘Cause if, nobody thinks to give stuff to the guidance counselors.
Anna Gilchrist : Right, yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: People think about the teachers. Yes. But think about all the stuff the guidance counselors do.
You know, and so we, we, you try to do that there
Anna Gilchrist : Yes
Jonathan Breeden: and stuff like that. So, so that’s great. That’s great.
Anna Gilchrist : Mm-hmm.
Jonathan Breeden: So where does it go from here? I mean, you’ve had one for three and a half years. You had one for a year and a half. Do we get one in [00:20:00] Cleveland? Do these stores expand? I mean, what, what happens now?
What’s the plan?
Anna Gilchrist : So my mom, actually, she just retired in June. And she has, it’s been laid on her heart that she wants to do the same thing and do it in the Cleveland area. So I, we’re looking currently in the Cleveland area and we want to have a nutrition shop in the Cleveland area. So more towards the schools, not exactly on the crazy part out
Jonathan Breeden: here.
Oh, I understand that. Yeah. I understand that. Well, that’s cool.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: That’s cool. I mean, does Herbalife keep coming up with new products that you can offer
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, yeah
Jonathan Breeden: each year? I mean, what, what are you hearing that they might be coming up with in the future? I, I’m sure you go to the conferences- and stuff like that. What might be coming? And that’s a huge company.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, so they’re moving into more personalized supplements. So recently they’ve come out with BioNic in June, or July they came out with that, where it’s personalized to your needs. You go in and you take a step-by-step test of what your goals are, whether it’s healthy aging or you want less you want more mental clarity and [00:21:00] focus, you want whatever it may be for you, more energy.
And you select what you want. You tell exactly, like, things that relate to you, and it comes up with a formula specified just to you with your name on it. So if I were to take yours, it does nothing for me. And if you were to take mine, it doesn’t help you in any way. So they’re going more into the personalized supplements, which is really exciting for the future.
Jonathan Breeden: Well, that’s cool. That’s cool. So how can people reach out to you? I know they can come visit the stores. Any other ways to reach out to you?
Anna Gilchrist : So on Instagram they’re both inspirenutrition.nc evolvenutrition.nc. You can find us on Facebook. And then email, they can send us a, a email at inspirenutrition517@gmail.com.
Jonathan Breeden: All right. Well, that’s cool.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: Well, the last question we ask everybody on this podcast, what do you love most about Johnston County?
Anna Gilchrist : I hate, I don’t wanna be like everyone else, but I do love the people. I do.
Jonathan Breeden: It’s hard not
Anna Gilchrist : to love
Jonathan Breeden: the
Anna Gilchrist : people here,
Jonathan Breeden: right?
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, I know. That’s why I’ve stayed here my whole life.
Born and raised here. The people are just support each other and are, you know, always there to, you know, [00:22:00] lift each other up, and it’s just one big, one big family in Johnston County, I feel like. And I feel like as Johnston County grows over time, I hope that it can k- you know, keep that same, same values of how we, we grow as a community.
Jonathan Breeden: No, I, I think it will, and I, I hope it will. And I think it will because the people are, you know, we’re getting more and more great people here. I know that’s debatable about how much we’re growing, but the growth’s gonna happen.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: And I think that people that come here that maybe aren’t as good of people, they become better people because they’re around such good people in Johnston County.
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah, yeah.
Jonathan Breeden: And it’s a tremendous community
Anna Gilchrist : Yeah
Jonathan Breeden: and it’s great, and I’m glad you’re doing what you’re doing and, and giving back, and I’m looking forward to the Cleveland store. You know, ’cause I don’t, I don’t make it to Smithfield or Flowers very much, but, but I definitely would come if it’s one in Cleveland.
So anyway, we’d like to thank AnnaKate Gilchrist, owner of Inspire and Evolve Nutrition for being our guest on this week’s episode of the Best of Johnston County podcast. Go visit the stores. There’s one right there at the Food Lion at 42 at Neuse River Parkway at Flowers Plantation, and in the Belk Shopping Center there on [00:23:00] North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield.
Open seven days a week. They’ll be glad to answer any of your questions about any of the products. There are, like, 50 different shakes or something, I think. I, it’s unbelievable. I don’t know how many shakes there are, but there are a ton of them. I looked at the menu. I couldn’t believe how many shakes there are.
And she tells me it will not taste like… It will taste good even though it’s not supposed to because of how healthy it is. So go find out for yourself and see what she can do to help you. One of my favorite things about hosting The Best of Johnston County Podcast is getting to talk with people who grew up here and are now finding ways to make our community better.
This week, I sat down with AnnaKate Gilchrist, owner of Inspire Nutrition in Clayton and Evolve Nutrition in Smithfield. AnnaKate is a Cleveland High School graduate, a former college softball player, and a young entrepreneur who took a chance on owning her first business before she even finished college.
What impressed me most wasn’t just how much she’s accomplished at a young age. It was how she’s taken something that helped her personally and turned it into an opportunity to serve the community she calls home.
From the Softball Field to Nutrition
AnnaKate grew up in Johnston County, attended the Cleveland schools, and eventually earned a softball scholarship opportunity at Barton College in Wilson, where she played pitcher and first base.
You might assume that a college athlete would have nutrition figured out. But AnnaKate admitted that wasn’t the case.
Between early morning classes, softball practices, traveling for games, and graduate courses that ran until 10 at night, she was constantly exhausted.
She was also working toward her bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in strategic leadership accounting, all while participating in the honors research program.
That’s when a teammate introduced her to a nutrition club in Wilson.
The shakes and energy teas quickly became part of her routine. She enjoyed the flavors, appreciated the convenience, and felt they helped her get through those long days.
Eventually, the owner encouraged AnnaKate to work at the shop. What started as an interest in the products became an introduction to the business itself.
And that experience would change the direction of her career.
Taking a Chance Before Graduation
One of the most interesting parts of AnnaKate’s story is how she became a business owner.
She originally thought she would become a CPA. But after taking accounting courses, she began questioning whether that was the right career for her.
Meanwhile, she’d started working at Vitality Nutrition in Wilson and was learning more about the business.
During her senior year at Barton, with just four months left before graduation and softball season underway, Inspire Nutrition in Clayton became available for purchase.
AnnaKate wasn’t convinced she was ready.
She was still finishing two degrees, playing college softball, and trying to figure out what came next. Running a business on top of everything else seemed overwhelming.
But after talking with her family and praying about the decision, she decided to take the opportunity.
She purchased Inspire Nutrition before graduating.
I can’t imagine juggling all of that at once. But AnnaKate saw an opportunity to build something in the community where she’d grown up, and she was willing to put in the work.
A little over two years later, another opportunity came along.
Evolve Nutrition in Smithfield became available, and this time AnnaKate had experience running her first location. With family ties to the Smithfield-Selma area, expanding there felt like a natural next step.
Today, she operates both locations with a team she credits for keeping everything running smoothly.
Making Protein Convenient and Enjoyable
Of course, I wanted to know what these nutrition shops actually sell.
AnnaKate walked me through a menu that includes protein shakes, energy teas, protein coffees, acai bowls, waffles, donuts, cake pops, and protein balls.
And yes, I was especially interested in whether the protein waffles actually taste like waffles.
According to AnnaKate, they do, although they’re a little more cake-like because of the protein content.
The stores use Herbalife Nutrition products, and AnnaKate explained that their standard protein shakes contain 24 grams of protein, 21 essential vitamins and nutrients, and fewer than 300 calories.
She describes them as meal replacements designed to offer a convenient way to get protein and other nutrients.
The protein coffees contain 15 grams of protein, while the waffles provide 30 grams.
Their energy teas are another popular option. AnnaKate said the standard version contains 200 milligrams of caffeine, although customers can request adjustments.
We also talked about customers who take GLP-1 medications and are looking for convenient ways to increase their protein intake.
AnnaKate recommends starting with a smaller shake to explore the flavors and options before ordering a full-size drink.
One thing I appreciated was her emphasis on helping customers find something they actually enjoy.
With so many flavors available, from fruity combinations to dessert-inspired shakes, there’s plenty to explore.
Of course, individual nutritional needs vary, and anyone managing a medical condition or taking medication should discuss their dietary requirements with a qualified healthcare professional.
Why Consistency Matters in Business
Running one business is challenging enough. Running two locations that are open seven days a week is something else entirely.
AnnaKate explained that one of her biggest priorities has been consistency.
Customers want to know that when they visit, the store will be open, their favorite products will be available, and their drinks will taste the same every time.
That’s why she puts so much emphasis on training her employees, maintaining inventory, and keeping dependable hours.
Both locations operate Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with holiday exceptions.
She also offers a rewards program where customers earn points toward future purchases.
As a fellow business owner, I understand how important it is to have employees you can trust.
AnnaKate can’t be in Clayton and Smithfield at the same time. Having knowledgeable staff who can take care of customers makes it possible for her to operate both businesses.
It’s a lesson that applies to just about any business. Growth becomes much more manageable when you have the right people helping you.
Giving Back to Johnston County Teachers
What I really enjoyed hearing about was AnnaKate’s commitment to supporting local schools.
Her mother spent years as a first-grade teacher, and her aunt also worked in education, eventually serving in school leadership and at the county office.
So AnnaKate understands how much teachers do for our community.
Through Inspire Nutrition and Evolve Nutrition, she regularly finds opportunities to give back to educators.
That includes donating teas during back-to-school events, recognizing teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, and supporting local PTAs.
We talked about how easy it can be to overlook some of the people who make our schools work.
I’ve tried to recognize the guidance counselors at Cleveland High School by buying them breakfast because they do so much for students and families.
Hearing AnnaKate talk about supporting teachers reminded me that giving back doesn’t always require some enormous project.
Sometimes it’s as simple as showing appreciation to people who spend their days helping others.
And when local businesses make that a priority, the whole community benefits.
Could Cleveland Be Next?
Naturally, I had to ask AnnaKate whether Cleveland might be getting its own nutrition shop.
And I was glad to hear that it’s a real possibility.
AnnaKate shared that her mother recently retired from teaching and has become interested in opening a nutrition shop of her own.
They’re currently looking at locations in the Cleveland area, particularly closer to the schools.
Nothing has been finalized, but it’s exciting to hear that another locally connected business could be coming to that part of Johnston County.
AnnaKate also talked about newer personalized supplement products from Herbalife, including a product called BioNic, which she described as being tailored to individual wellness goals.
It’s clear that she’s paying attention to how her industry is changing while continuing to focus on the two stores she already operates.
And I think that’s an encouraging approach to growth.
She’s looking ahead without forgetting what helped her get started.
What Makes Johnston County Special
I always end these conversations by asking guests what they love most about Johnston County.
AnnaKate gave an answer I’ve heard many times before, but one that never gets old.
“I do love the people.”
She talked about growing up here, staying connected to the community, and seeing how people support one another.
As Johnston County continues to grow, she hopes we can hold on to that sense of connection.
I couldn’t agree more.
We have more people moving here, more businesses opening, and more opportunities developing throughout the county. But what makes this place special isn’t just the growth.
It’s the relationships we build along the way.
AnnaKate’s story is a good example of that. She grew up here, went away to college, discovered something she loved, and brought that opportunity back home.
Now she’s building businesses, creating opportunities for her employees, and finding ways to support the schools and communities that helped shape her.
That’s exactly the kind of story I love sharing on this podcast.
And if that Cleveland location becomes a reality, I might finally have an excuse to try one of those protein shakes myself.
